about

Named after a semi-mythological plant described in 16th century travellers’ tales, 'The Borametz Tree' is the first album from C Joynes & The Furlong Bray, a project lead by guitarist C Joynes featuring members of free folk ensemble Dead Rat Orchestra, plus electroacoustic composer Cam Deas and multi-instrumentalist Nick Jonah Davis.

"A strange and beautiful collection of hybrid oddities" ★★★★ MOJO

"This year's most explorative gem" ★★★★ RNR

"Fierce sounds that belong to places that may or may not exist"
THE QUIETUS

'This is a significant step in the ongoing hybridisation of postmodern music. As real as fried kidneys for breakfast.' WIRE

"C Joynes & The Furlong Bray have dreamed up a wholly convincing invisible city and utopian alternative musical history of the world." DUSTED MAGAZINE

"A multi-paced and multi-cultured journey that is utterly idiosyncratic; at times dense in its structure and challenging in its rhythm, at others gentle and spare. Layered and intelligent, finding art and inspiration from many places, this particular result is something that really should be heard." FOLK RADIO

"'The Borametz Tree' is a difficult-to-describe hybrid of approaches and techniques, drawn from the vast collective imagination of the group, abetted by field recordings and cassettes Joynes has collected on his peregrinations across continents." BYRON COLEY

"A musical hybrid and fantastical beast that pushes the envelope of experimentation and style, and sounds unlike any other release."
SONGLINES

"Lopsided, unconventional and giddy, it’s the sound of the kitchen sink tumbling down the stairs..." CONCRETE ISLAND

"Incontrovertible evidence of the existence of dissonant earworms" fROOTS

"Together, Joynes and The Furlong Bray sound like the band that Tom Waits would feel lucky to find if he ended up in the British countryside" MAGNET MAGAZINE

about

C Joynes Cambridge, UK

“An inheritor to Davy Graham; a lone operator prone to unexpected collaborations, with a repertoire that crosses continents and timezones with consummate ease.” THE WIRE

“His epigrammatic re-castings and re-readings of widely-travelled melodies and rhythms from a variety of traditions suggest shared memories that might be intensely universal while seeming strangely out of reach. " DUSTED MAGAZINE
